Legal Intern, Open Technology Initiative (Summer 2012)

The New America Foundation’s Open Technology Initiative (OTI) provides the opportunity to explore the legal and policy implications of cutting edge technologies. Part-time legal interns or full-time legal fellows will be expected to provide legal analysis and research on issues related to networked technology, media policy, freedom of expression, copyright and patent law.

As a think tank, the New America Foundation offers an experience beyond the parameters of a law firm and enables students and recent graduates to experience the policy and regulatory processes that impact the evolution of cutting edge technological developments.

Interns and fellows will be expected to contribute to research and policy work; pursue additional research and writing on topics of their interest; publish blog posts, articles or research papers; participate in policy forums and conferences; and initiate white papers and journal articles.

OTI is currently accepting intern applications for Spring and Summer, 2012.

Responsibilities

  • Explore the legal and policy implications of cutting edge technologies.
  • Provide legal justification and analysis for regulatory filings, papers, and articles.
  • Research legal issues related to and intersecting with doctrines of intellectual property, communications, human rights, and international trade law.
  • Author papers, filings, and blog posts.
  • Conduct additional research and writing assignments as needed.
  • Liaise with academic and policy communities for organizing policy forums and conferences.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Enrollment in law school program or recent graduate;
  • Strong interest in technology policy;
  • Capacity to conceptualize and deconstruct Interdisciplinary legal and policy queries;
  • Ability to research and analyze converging legal issues;
  • Strong legal research and writing skills;
  • Familiarity with Internet research tools; and
  • Characteristics such as maturity, dependability, and enthusiasm for working in an environment conducive to both independence and collaboration.

The position is unpaid though externship or other course credit could be arranged, depending on school curriculum requirements.
