Improving Value and Controlling Costs

No health reform proposal will be sustainable over time without serious efforts to improve value and control costs. We believe the new health reform law takes meaningful steps toward bending the cost curve and improving health care quality, and are glad to see reform adopt principles congruent to those listed here. We can control cost growth and enhance quality through a three-pronged approach.

1. Establish an electronic health information system to streamline health care delivery, increase transparency, and use data to create decision support tools

2. Produce more information about what treatments work and do not work in our health system

3. Create incentives for patients and providers to make high-value diagnostic and treatment choices
