The AARP, American Cancer Society, Consumers Union, Families USA, and SEIU sent a joint letter to Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi this week, encouraging them "in the strongest terms" to act quickly on health reform, reports the Los Angeles Times.

"The legislation passed by the House and Senate would broaden access to quality, affordable healthcare to tens of millions of people who are currently uninsured or underinsured," wrote leaders of the AARP, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Consumers Union, Families USA and the Service Employees International Union.

"The bills also make important changes to emphasize disease prevention, place greater emphasis on healthcare quality, and take vital steps to improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery systems," the groups added. "The legislation is not perfect. No bill is. But now is not the time to turn back."

Families USA also sent their own letter to members of Congress, asking them to show “political courage, vision, and leadership" by enacting meaningful health reform now.

“The Senate bill would expand health coverage to approximately 31 million people -- and the House bill would reach even more,” they wrote, “you no doubt met many of these people in the communities you represent. You probably can remember their plea to make our health system better -- and to make quality health coverage and care affordable. We must not abandon these people.”
