HEALTH POLITICS: Republicans Suggest Democrats Might Deny Them Health Care

Published:  August 31, 2009

Every time we think the rhetoric can't get uglier or stranger... well, you know the end of this sentence.

The AP reported this weekend:

The Republican National Committee suggested in a recent fundraising appeal that Democrats might use an overhaul of the health-care system to deny medical treatment to Republicans.

A questionnaire accompanying the mailing says the government could check voting registration records, "prompting fears that GOP voters might be discriminated against for medical treatment in a Democrat-imposed health-care rationing system." It asks, "Does this possibility concern you?"

An RNC spokeswoman said the question had been "inartfully worded."

The AP said:

The suggestion in the RNC letter is not the first instance in which opponents of the health-care proposals have made inflammatory, unfounded claims. It comes after some conservatives helped popularize the inaccurate claim that the legislation would create "death panels" to decide who among the ailing or elderly were deserving of medical treatment.
